About the YRRN

According to DoD studies, there are over 400,000 nonprofit organizations devoted to assisting service members, Veterans, survivors and their families in the United States and many were originated in response to the events of September 11, 2001. As the conflict in South West Asia evolved into what is now the longest war in our history, grateful American's have contributed generously to these organizations who have typically worked independently. Emergency financial assistance has emerged as one of the top 3 types of needs by those returning from service. With thousands of nonprofits providing financial assistance, there needed to be a centralized history of it all.

In 2008, VeteransPlus was founded to meet the need for financial literacy within the growing military and Veteran population. Using a "Veteran counseling Veteran" model, VeteransPlus has provided preventative & rehabilitative financial literacy through education and counseling to over 170,000 men and women who have worn the nation's uniform. The origins of the Yellow Ribbon Registry Network (YRRN) grew out of the awareness that VeteransPlus clients who required emergency financial aid would have to find their way through a web of organizations, each with their own criteria for assistance. There had to be a better way and to ease this burden, the YRRN was established.

Committed to the principal that financial assistance works best when the recipient is armed with financial literacy, VeteransPlus brought together a group of leading financial relief organizations to form the Yellow Ribbon Registry Network. By creating a single, secure website to act as a clearinghouse of client data collected by partners, resources would be maximized, duplication of services would be reduced, unmet needs would be identified and clients would be served more effectively.

On November 11, 2011 VeteransPlus officially launched the YRRN. Through this dynamic internet-based communication system, the YRRN screens and verifies certain background information of an individual or family seeking assistance and ensures that an applicant is not seeking help from multiple partners for the same need or service. But the YRRN is not just about technology. Rather, it is about technology-enabled collaboration among nonprofit partners to increase cooperation. For donors, the YRRN offers the opportunity to give to multiple organizations through one platform and connect directly with the men and women who they wish to assist.
